And That’s a Wrap Folks!

And that’s a wrap folks! The 2012-13 academic year has ended with lots of excitement. The Special Olympics, as one of our largest events of the year, was a great success with over 160 athletes from six counties. More than 250 volunteers joined participants as “buddies” to navigate the various aquatic and track field events. Other activities included arts and crafts, music, and dancing. A special thanks goes out to all of the WJU teams that helped make this a meaningful event for everyone. It has been a great year and we wish the best of luck to students leaving campus, especially the graduating class, as they keep serving God and each other. As St. Ignatius said, “Go set the world on fire”. Special Olympics Athlete Competes at the WJU Track

Halloween Fun with Service

Who says you can't have fun while serving?  Last week students and guests with special needs showed off their moves at the annual Disc Dance. The Auxiliary Gym was transformed into a Halloween-themed party with music, coloring and snacks.  The mentees of the HESS program also celebrated the season with Trick-Or-Treating in a residence hall and candy-filled games.  If that’s not enough, just yesterday WJU students visited the local Juvenile Detention Center for a holiday party with incarcerated youth. They played a series of races, including moving a cookie from your forehead to your mouth without hands, wrapping up a partner like a mummy with toilet paper and finally, eating a dangling doughnut on a string. These good times came from dedicated, fun-loving students looking to make a difference. Are you one of them?

“Off the Hook” HESS Fishing Trip

The Service for Social Action Center has been teaming with students for some incredible events this month. Last weekend the HESS students went to Oglebay Park for an exciting fishing trip! We also had our Super Sunday Dance where students made crafts, did face painting and danced with adults with special needs. Thanks to everyone who helped at both events to make them so successful! We also partnered up with the Appalachian Institute to send a group of WJU students and employees to Logan County to help gut a house damaged by the recent flooding. These dedicated volunteers took off an entire work/school day and drove a total of 8 hours to serve with others in need. Now that’s dedication!
