And That’s a Wrap Folks!

And that’s a wrap folks! The 2012-13 academic year has ended with lots of excitement. The Special Olympics, as one of our largest events of the year, was a great success with over 160 athletes from six counties. More than 250 volunteers joined participants as “buddies” to navigate the various aquatic and track field events. Other activities included arts and crafts, music, and dancing. A special thanks goes out to all of the WJU teams that helped make this a meaningful event for everyone. It has been a great year and we wish the best of luck to students leaving campus, especially the graduating class, as they keep serving God and each other. As St. Ignatius said, “Go set the world on fire”. Special Olympics Athlete Competes at the WJU Track

Summer Progress

Summer may be a time of rest and relaxation for some, but the Service for Social Action Center has been busy getting ready for a new school year and new developments that come with it. Those on campus know that there is construction going on in the old kiosk, but they may not know the SSAC is behind it. We’ll just say that the final product is going to be a combo of service, studying space and some really nice couches. There is also a new leadership program being built that will graduate its first cohort by the end of the year. The unveiling will take place shortly for some of our student leaders arriving early. And did we mention that there will be some new faces around the office? Stay tuned!

Spanish Students Serve

There is certainly less hustle and bustle with most students gone for the summer, but there is no lack of updates. We have been excited to match the visiting high school students from Spain with service projects in the area and anticipate the group to complete over 150 volunteer hours. Their placements range from assembling wheelchairs at the Free Wheelchair Mission to selling root beer floats and many other projects. The SSAC was happy to attend some special events, such as the dedication/renaming of Stone Blvd to Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, the 50 year anniversary of the Wheeling Human Rights Commission and the very special wedding of the SSAC Coordinator, Adrienne Tharp! We hope you have a safe and enjoyable remainder of the summer!

Return of the Summer Immersion Trips

School’s out for summer! We hope everyone is enjoying their break as a chance to relax, rejuvenate and reconnect with your home communities.  It certainly is quiet around the WJU campus. We recently celebrated the safe return of two immersion trips. Our Sophomore Arrupe Service Scholars were in Mingo County, WV learning and serving in a beautiful region of rural Appalachia. They performed farm chores with the Sisters at Big Laurel Ecology Center and helped at a kid’s camp. The Junior Arrupe Scholars found themselves in the opposite environment of urban Camden, NJ where they volunteered through the Romero Center as well as simulated what it’s like to live as a working poor person in a major city. We hope you enjoyed our postcard!
